7 Headshot Wardrobe Mistakes to Avoid

As a headshot photographer serving the San Antonio area, I often get asked by clients "What should I wear for my session?"

My clients want to choose outfits that showcase their personality and make them look great. To help them make the best choices, I provide detailed resources such as a "What to Wear" guide and offer fashion consultations. I also give tips on avoiding mistakes that can make outfits look outdated, wash out skin tones, overpower faces, or create an unflattering silhouette.

LET’S DIVE IN TO 7 HEADSHOT SESSION WARDROBE MISTAKES TO AVOID:

  1. Repeating the same colors in all of your outfits. While a monochromatic color scheme can be appealing, your branding photos should feature a variety of colors that reflect your personality. Consider choosing a range of hues that complement your skin tone for a vibrant and fresh look. Determine whether you have a warm, cool, or neutral skin tone and select colors that enhance your complexion. If you still prefer to stick with a limited color palette, make sure to incorporate different shades to add interest.

  2. Wearing bold accessories. It's important to keep accessories simple. Accessories that are too bold can create a visual imbalance in the photo, drawing attention away from the face. It's best to stick with small, delicate pieces that complement the outfit and enhance the overall look without overwhelming the face, or you can choose not to wear any jewelry at all.

  3. Wearing too many trends. While staying on trend can be fashionable, it's important to choose wardrobe pieces that truly reflect your personality. Instead of trying to fit into a certain trend, opt for clothing that feels true to you.

  4. Wearing the same style for every outfit. To ensure variety in your personal branding images, avoid wearing the same type of clothing or style in every outfit. Bring a mix of different pieces, such as denim, a business jacket, a skirt or sweater, and vary the styles from casual to sophisticated. This will create a diverse set of images that showcase different sides of your personality.

  5. Wearing colors that don’t complement your skin tone. Choosing colors that do not complement your skin tone can make you appear washed out and dull in photos. To look your best, pick hues that are known to suit your seasonal undertones, such as warm, cool, or neutral shades. This will ensure that your skin looks vibrant and fresh.

  6. Wearing outits you wouldn’t normally wear. Avoid wearing something that is not reflective of your personal style. This will ensure that you will be able to confidently use your images in various placements and not regret your outfit choices.
